Slang and Colloquial terms 7 (for B2/C1 level students)

Dear ELT community,
Here´s EPISODE 7 of SLANG AND COLLOQUIAL TERMS HEARD IN AMERICAN MOVIES AND SERIES (For B2/C1 level students)

This time we´re gonna focus on the following 10 terms:

CUT IT OUT    –    GET IT ON    –    NOT KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT    –    SHUT THE FUCK UP

CUT TO THE CHASE   –   BEAT   –   FREAKING   –   SCREW SOMEONE OVER   –   DOWNER   –   TUX

I – MEANING/EXPLANATION + EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  1. Cut it out!: stop doing or saying something that is annoying

Ex.: “Hey, you two, cut it out!”, said Tom when he saw his kids fighting. 

  1. Get it on: have sex

Ex.: “I finally got it on with Vivian last night. It was amazing!”, Dan told Brian.

  1. Not know jack shit about: not know anything at all about

Ex.: “You´ll have to teach the new recruit everything you know about the shipping department. He doesn´t know jack shit, I´m afraid.”, said Henry to a coworker. 

  1. Shut the fuck up:very rude way to tell someone to be quiet; shut up

Ex.: “Shut the fuck up, will you? Enough is enough.”, said Will angrily. 

  1. Cut to the chase:get to the point; be direct; say what is really important without delay

Ex.: “Sorry, I don´t have time for long explanations now. Could you, please, cut to the chase and tell me what the problem is?”, Howard asked Vince.

  1. Beat:exhausted; extremely tired

Ex.: “I need to get some rest. I´m beat.”, said Roy to his friends.

  1. Freaking:euphemism for “fucking” used as an intensifier

Ex.: “You should bundle up before you go out. It´s freaking cold out there.”, said Ronald to his roommate. 

  1. Screw someone over: take advantage of someone; give someone a very bad time

“I would watch out for Ryan if I were you. He´ll screw you over if you´re not careful.”, Ex.: Mitch advised Donald.

  1. Downer: an event or experience that makes you sad, disappointed or unhappy; someone or something that is depressing

Ex.: “Talking to Harry can be a real downer. He whines about everything and always sees the glass half empty.”, said Sheila to a friend.

10.Tux: a tuxedo

Ex.: “I´ve never worn a tux before. Do you know where I can buy a nice one?”, Ralph asked Vivian.

II – EXERCISE 1:  REWRITE THE SENTENCES IN A MORE COLLOQUIAL WAY  (10 SENTENCES)

  1. After the long hike in the woods James and his friends were feeling exhausted.
  2. “Harold is a nice guy. I won´t let Bill take advantage of him.”, said Justin to a friend.
  3. “This strawberry shake tastes freaking, good man!”, Stanley told Rudy.
  4. “So, tell me, did you have sex with that girl you met at the bar?”, Bob asked Richard.
  5. George had to rent a tuxedo for his sister´s wedding.
  6. “Losing your pet dog can be really depressing. I know that from experience.”, Samantha told Claire.
  7. “I´m in a big hurry now. Just get to the point and tell me what you want me to do.”, said James to Harry.
  8. “I can´t listen to the news with all that noise. Can you, please,tell your brothers to stop doing that?”, Jim asked his teenage daughter.
  9. “I wish Fred would just shut up. I´m sick and tired of all his bullshit.”, said Brian to his friends.
  10. “Frank doesn´t know anything at all about fashion despite the fact that his girlfriend is a model.”, said Manuel to a friend.
