I – Meaning/Explanation of the Phrasal Verbs + Example Sentences
1.Use up: use all of something
Ex.: Jeff used up all his money to buy a new car.
2.Fall back on: turn to; begin to use something held in reserve; depend on someone or something after a loss
Ex.: Tony had to fall back on his savings after he lost his job.
3. Hang out: spend time in a particular place or with certain people
Ex.: Jason loves to hang out with his friends at the pub on Friday nights.
4. Pipe down:stop talking; become quiet; stop making noise
Ex.: “Hey, will you, please, pipe down? I´m trying to sleep!”, said George to his roommates.
5.Watch over: guard and protect someone or something
Ex.: Deborah´s neighbor watched over her house while Deborah was away on a business trip.
6. Run by: introduce an idea or a subject to someone so that they can give their opinion about it
Ex.: “I think I´ll run the subject by the people at the meeting today. They might help find a solution.”, said Leonard to a coworker.
7. Bundle up: put on warm clothes; wrap in something warm
Ex.: “Make sure you bundle up before you go out today. It´s really cold.”, Janet told Tyler.
8. Hear of: know about someone or something
Ex.: “I´d never heard of that writer before. Do you know if he´s famous?”, Clive asked Joanne.
9. Hear from: receive news or information from
Ex.: “I haven´t heard from Nick in a month. Do you know if he´s all right?”, Frank asked Stella.
10. Keep on: continue doing something
Ex.: All of his coworkers had already left the office, but Michael kept on working till about 9 pm.
